You need to take time out to Think. But trust me when I say that my observations across many startups (and other companies, frankly) is that not enough time goes into thinking. Every so often after a few weeks of go-go-go I work from home from a day. Or I will get some good time in at a hotel just zoning out and thinking.
Somehow the world seems to be spinning faster these days than just a few years ago. The frantic pace of technology cycles, the amount of tech news, the blogs, the conferences, the demo days, the announcements, the fundings, the IPOs. It got me thinking about the advice that I often give to new VCs. It’s exhausting.
So I went to college with no expectation that I would ever join a fraternity let alone aspire to become president one day. But I walked away with a big lesson that I carry to this day. Don’t you see that when we were young those leaders thought the fraternity had changed from the days when their elders were running it?
Appreciate the simple things in life and appreciate the difference they can make to the day. Take more time to fully think things through.
