This week is CS Education Week. There are CS Education week events all around the world, mostly in schools where students will do an hour of coding. In NYC, where I do most of my CS Education work, there are CS Education week events in many/most of the public school buildings this week.
Fewer women obtaining CS degrees means fewer women becoming software developers. That’s a significant drop from 1985, when 34% of CS degrees were earned by women. One positive development, however, is that more women are seeking graduate degrees in CS than before.
There is a huge gap within schools between the average tech savvy of a B-school student and where the CS & Engineering programs are—and there’s very little cross collaboration going on to fix that. God forbid a school should get a little departmental cross collaboration going!

Series Bs are up 43%, and Series Cs are up by a quarter. On the other hand, the Series A market is up about 10% from the trailing 2 year period previous high. Median round sizes have skyrocketed across all stages. Seed has more than doubled. Series As have increased by 25%. Seed rounds are down from 1400 to about 400.
It’s not uncommon for incredibly smart and talented Phd’s or CS majors from Stanford to raise $10 million on an early-stage “platform&# that if it succeeds it will be huge. They not only have gotten bigger but they have an amazing track record of funding the biggest names in the sector: Cisco, Apple, Google, Facebook.
How can we affect what CS students are learning? Let’s set a goal that 10%, than 15%, than who knows how many of local school graduates not only wind up in the innovation community, but with the kind of skills they need to be useful. What would a startup training syllabus look like?
Any job search platform these days will show there are thousands of customer success (CS) positions waiting to be filled. According to research by Gainsight, a customer success software platform, “companies that invest 10% or more of their revenue into the CS function have the highest net recurring revenue (NRR).”.

Series Cs now routinely include secondary capital for founders, and many Series Ds are above $100 million with valuations in the billions. The VC alphabet soup has been spilled, making A rounds look like Bs used to, and the Bs seem like the Cs of old. Which begs an interesting question: Is the seed round the new Series A?

Series Cs fell from $14M to $8.5M (a 40% drop). Seed rounds stayed constant at $300k (different era!). Series A round sizes fell from $4M to $2.6M (a 35% drop) and then rebounded over the next 8 quarters. Series B rounds fell from $10M to $6M. By deal count, however, it was business as usual across the early fundraising rounds by count.
For Series Cs, the round count increased from 74 to 76. The earlier the stage, the greater the delta. And of course, the earlier data under-reports the total round numbers. In the seed stage, Q2 data reported 427 rounds compared to 719 in Q4. Let’s look at those on a percentage basis.

As Series Cs can be considered the first “late” startup stage, companies looking to raise the particular tranche appear to be running into backwash from the public markets, where tech valuations have come down sharply and IPOs are moribund at best.
Customer success (CS) within SaaS startups is a relatively new idea. Consequently, the benefits of CS aren’t widely appreciated within the ecosystem which means in many companies, customer success teams must educate management teams about the impact they can effect on an organization. This can be a long process.
Because there have been “crunches” at various stages before, the fact that Series Cs are particularly stubborn today might not ruffle your feathers. We argued that the collected information showed the existence of a Series C “crunch,” or a bottleneck in the capital ladder that startups climb.

The second is that the wave of companies born in the early 2010s that needed to raise large Cs and Ds have already done so. Series As and Cs are roughly similar. Through the lens of history, they look more like Bs and Cs. And in 2013, the Series B median surpassed the 2009 Series C median. Two blocks of the ladder have flipped. We still call these rounds As and Bs. Many founders have aspired to “skip” a round of financing. Raise a large enough seed to jump straight to the Series B.
The four Cs: Consumer, cost, communication and convenience. This is considered to be the producer-oriented model. These are still the driving focus behind most marketing courses, and deserve to be so. Then there is the four C’s, the consumer-oriented marketing model (2). This makes sense too, and surely deserves time.
