Climate Crisis: Extinction Rebellion

Continuations

Tell the truth: Government must tell the truth by declaring a climate and ecological emergency, working with other institutions to communicate the urgency for change. Change politics: Government must create and be led by the decisions of a Citizens’ Assembly on climate and ecological justice. I recently recorded a podcast about the climate crisis where I made the point that we should not think about innovation versus activism, we need both.

The Unified Theory of Food Investing for Tech VCs

This is going to be BIG.

Will they all be part of a movement to get a lot more conscious about our own ecological footprints, where our food comes from, and it's quality? One of the aspects of running a venture fund that I am most excited about is turning over rocks that other VCs might not. I'm less likely to get excited about the next big photo sharing app coming out of YC, and more into going "where no VC has gone before.". Whatever I do, it needs to be in big enough spaces. What are the biggest opportunities?

Hacking Innovation Education in New York

This is going to be BIG.

If schools are going to participate in the growth of NYC’s innovation ecology, they’re going to have to change the way they operate, or they’re going to get lapped and left behind. Business plan competitions are the air guitar championships of the startup world. This is the case when the requirements of these events don’t actually include building a real business or product.

10 Key Buildings in the Brooklyn Innovation Community

This is going to be BIG.

menagerie of creative entrepreneurs occupies the seven-story building, now known as the Metropolitan Exchange, or MEx, including biotechnologists, ecologically minded architects, organic fashion designers and even miniature-cupcake makers. Why Yelp should pay attention to not shooting itself in the face (and what ripping off Foursquare and taking big money from Elevation mean)

This is going to be BIG.

Undoubtedly, that kind of strategy will actually work against Yelp in today’s ecology. Back in July, I wrote a piece called “ Why Yelp (…and every single retail establishment) Should Support Foursquare ”. Whitney McNamara referred to as the “post that launched 1000 VCs”, but it was really meant to open up a dialogue between an innovative little company hyperfocused on an important piece of data—when people show up to venues—and a bigger company dependent on relationships with venues.

Five common misconceptions about building a startup in New York City

This is going to be BIG.

Just because there are a lot of startups living off of a certain ecology in a city doesn’t mean you can’t build a different kind of company in that place. It’s really difficult for me not to get into the thick of discussions about whether or not you can and/or should build a company in New York City. I grew up here, went to school here, and have worked hard over the last 5+ years to help build up the NYC innovation community.
