I do know one company that returned 70% of its capital during the 2001 cycle after everything shut down, and one of the co-founders was able to raise a successful round a few years later, but I’m unclear if it was correlation or causality. In my first company I had to raise money in April 2001 or die. The VCs basically have liquidity in management fees along the way, in the sense they get paid decently along the way.
