For startups, a good Board is better than no Board, but a bad Board is worse than anything. One component of a good Board is a high value add Independent Board Member, which in my experience, often doesn’t get added early enough (for a variety of reasons). So what follows are Five Question with Nilam.
Be careful about boardconstruction. Can always appoint other startup CEOs to the board to take founder seats (which you control) and/or bring in industry experts as independents. Equally – a great VP Finance can be leveraged well to take on finance, legal, HR and much of the operational tasks. Limit the number of VCs.
Conferences, startup blogs, meetups--they're all filled with people telling you how to build your company. VCs construct stories in their head as to why they invested in this or that, and much of it is based on prior experience, but they're often awful at articulating the real reasons.
