I started in 2007 with a thesis that my primary investment decision would be about the team (70%) and only afterward about the market opportunity (30%). Today we’re in a world where 10 accelerators are bombarding you with emails to meet their 10-15 companies. Even if we miss on lots of great opportunities. I don’t.
We have significant VC commitments (listed below) – every entering company will get $50,000 in funding, mentorship from top VCs and successful entrepreneurs plus free office space. To provide an opportunity for VCs and senior executives to engage with the community by giving back rather than just attending more cocktail parties.
There are obvious reasons the industry has had less-than-desirable returns, including: massive over-funding of the sector, huge increases in inexperienced venture capitalists that took a decade to peter out, and the massive correction in the value of the public stock markets that closed many exit opportunities for half a decade.
I''m just trying to invest in the best opportunities. You''ve been in VC long enough to see lots of different funds, partners and deals. You get a lot of choice as a VC as to who you want to spend your time with. Are there existing larger VC funds that you''d consider joining, or are you BBV for life? Hard to believe.
I spoke at Michael Kim’s excellent annual Cendana VC/LP conference today. You can read it in VCs discussions about hedge fund managers, activist investors or the need to have dual-share voting structures. As a VC firm, we’ve had to adapt many aspects of our business as well. From taking all aspects of our accelerators digital (including our Demo Day) to rethinking the opportunities of the future, we’ve taken this moment to analyze what innovations can come from this time and new opportunities that arise from our changing environment.
It’s that time of year, time to look back and reflect on the most significant storylines in the tech, startup, and VC world. Traditional seed funds have gotten bigger, many armed with opportunity funds on top. Telegram announced their ICO and raised over $1B from some of the best VC firms. 2/ The Scooter Phenomenon.
The easiest way to work with and for VC funds is to become a part-time scout, getting paid for sourcing investments. How to find a job as a VC scout. VC recruiters list and compensation data. How to negotiate a partner role at a VC or private equity firm. Syllabus for how to launch, manage, and invest a VC fund.
They''re a career accelerator, which is a pretty neat concept--doing what YC and Techstars do for startups, but for your career. You can''t rise up as fast taking a job at a VC firm in NYC the same way you could 10 years ago--and you can''t get that USV job as easily as you could. I had something VC firms were interested in.
Brett Calhoun Contributor Share on Twitter Brett Calhoun is the managing director and general partner at Redbud VC. Amid these turbulent times, the VCaccelerator industry has emerged as a stalwart player. At the dawn of 2022, there were 2,900 active VC firms, marking a 225% increase since 2008.

I believe that over capitalizing companies too early often favors the VC. Talking about whether to raise more money or not, their VC allegedly said to them: “If you had more capital, could you get to the future faster? Facebook, Google) to a large market opportunity then you had better have enough resources to compete.

You don't need an accelerator or that one "kingmaking" angel investor to be a success--especially if you don't like who they are as a person or how they treat people. Too many people blindly say yes to anything they think will move them just a half an inch forward, and so they'll miss out on opportunities to catapult them light years ahead.
Some of the opportunities involve machines, while an equal amount of opportunity lies in the software behind the machines.
