That prediction obviously turned out pretty wrong, but it did drum up a whole lot of chatter about the right ingredients for building a startup community—about New York vs Boston on the East Coast and whether cities like Austin and Seattle would ever break through. What makes people like that want to live in any particular community?

After a recent discussion I had with Steve Blank it made me remember that I had left off one of the most critical factors – a culture of failure. I lived in London from 1997-2005 and for 6 of those years ran my startup based out of London.

Why we run this particular mission.

The community norms and values of the space had been carefully nurtured by the three people that started it. We wanted to stay in that physical space, so we wound up merging with a startup who needed at office. There were about ten indie coworkers from the original community and ten employees of this startup.
