At least startups have accelerators, incubators, etc. Good luck doing it if you're not already tied into that world--which is a different world than just the startup ecosystem. In fact, thanks to increased scrutiny of investment funds in a post-Madoff world, this imbalance will probably get bigger and bigger.

The startup ecosystem is filled with people who have walked the path before and are often willing to share their experiences and advice. Consider attending startup events, joining incubators or accelerators, and seeking out people in your industry who are open to mentoring.
