It was 2009 and it was terribly difficult to get any financing (if you can remember a time like that!) and I thought if we brought the community together for common purpose we could create more of a sense of community to help new entrepreneurs get funded, assemble teams, raise profiles and help with biz dev, product, etc.

How else can you explain this headline matching a story about a professional social network still trying to explore revenues raising $17mm on an $80mm valuation? The last closed market we had was from about September 2008 until June 2009--10 months. International and non-Valley startup communities are developing at a rapid pace.

Ironically enough, the second nudge she gave my career also had to do with AOL--ten years later when in 2009, she introduced me to Jon Brod who was forming AOL Ventures. Did you analyze the market and see an opening as if this was a management consulting exercise or are you passionate about it based on some impactful life experience?

As more consumers were skipping commercials the idea of authentically integrating brands into media seemed obvious to me and ended up informing a lot of my investments in 2009 and 2010. He reached out to younger founders and offered to help via his network at AT&T, Google, media agencies … you name it. We watched together.
