Recently, I worked with a community that was struggling to explain what they thought success looked like in ten years to their funding organizations. The traditional economic development approach uses static and reactive metrics – the number of jobs created, capital investment dollars, and companies recruited – on an annual basis.

Mom-and-pop businesses, the kinds of establishments that make up the backbone of a community, stand to do much worse. It's not just livelihoods that are threatened, but our very sense of community. Employers would get quarterly tax credits through 2020 to reimburse them for this expense.

For 25 years, Salyer led Accel Financial Staffing, until the sale of the company to key employees in the 3 rd quarter of 2020. Salyer made the decision to take her community service commitment to a new level in November 2008 when she successfully ran for the Ward 6 City Council seat. Meg retired from the Council April 8, 2019.
