In my Twitter bio is says that I’m “ looking to invest in passionate entrepreneurs ,” which almost sounds like I was just looking for a cliché soundbite to describe myself. Passion is also the featured heavily in nearly every presentation I give to entrepreneurs or on college campuses or in talks with MBA students.
WHEN DID YOU SAY TO YOURSELF, “I HAVE WHAT IT TAKES TO BE AN ENTREPRENEUR”? I remember walking into my house after my first Forum experience in 2009. For 30 years, EO has been led by countless members who have volunteered their time to help strengthen the organization. I have used this skill to launch several businesses over the years.
“ One summer day, probably in the 1870s, friends of a major short-seller got together on the shores of Newport, Rhode Island, where they admired the enormous yachts of New York’s richest brokers. After gazing long and thoughtfully at the beautiful boats, the short seller asked wryly, ‘Where are the customers’ yachts?’ ”.
It was 2009 and it was terribly difficult to get any financing (if you can remember a time like that!) and I thought if we brought the community together for common purpose we could create more of a sense of community to help new entrepreneurs get funded, assemble teams, raise profiles and help with biz dev, product, etc.
The idea is simple enough: several female VC partners at top funds will hold 1-hour meetings with 40 promising female entrepreneurs looking to get advice on their business and pitch in a friendly, non-judgmental, safe environment. Dan talks about a landmark case in 2009 that involved whether it was legal to strip search a 13-year-old girl.
I was saying that I was happy it was all out in the open because I felt at least everybody could now understand the issues & opportunities from the perspectives of angels, entrepreneurs and VCs. Jody didn’t exactly have an easy time fund raising because he’s not one of the prototypical Silicon Valley funded entrepreneurs.
The VC market has right-sized (returned back to mid 90′s levels & less competition). Lower costs to start a business (95% reduction), many more companies created & funded by angels / seed. But it still takes VC to scale a business (thus large capital into industry winners like Uber, Airbnb, SnapChat, etc). Why is this?
This is an exciting opportunity for women entrepreneurs. The entrepreneurs will get to participate in virtual programming that’s been custom-tailored to meet the needs of businesses during COVID-19, receive access to an online network of 130+ peers, $5K for education, and much more. www.guidantfinancial.com. How to Apply.
Surely because they are more successful than their peers, it stands to reason they’re extremely sharp or even smarter than their non-CEO cohorts. But if you are starting a company, responsible for part of an organization, or making bets on entrepreneurs, you are most likely to succeed if you act as a sponge. Management Style.
They walk away having spoken to a lot of new people, but not having made any real connections for themselves or their peers. So, in 2009, Adrian created Adrian’s Network , an innovative and (very) successful business networking community that combines virtual networking (think conference calls and webinars) with in-person meetings.
After all, I am no stranger to the publicly expressing the frustrations of dealing with the downside of this industry as I wrote about in 2006 when I was an entrepreneur. I read Andy’s post with a knowing smile on my face. But VC is like congress. It’s easy to hate it en masse yet many people love their local congressman.
Jill shared lessons learned and more in a blog post to mark the occasion. Below is an excerpt from the original article. I’m incredibly grateful for the amazing customers and employees who brought us to this milestone! To celebrate our anniversary, I’m sharing a few pivotal lessons I have learned during each of these wonderful years. I was nervous!
EO Philadelphia Executive Director Katie Baer shares her story of entrepreneur-style community and support. I was hired in early June 2009 as the part-time administrator for the EO Philadelphia chapter. The great thing about entrepreneurs is that they don’t ask what they can do, they just do.
Kathryn Garcia wants to be Mayor of New York City. No, I mean, she actually wants to do the job. It’s not a platform for her to promote any experiments. It’s not something she’s doing because that’s the next logical step in a political ladder. It’s not an interesting career change for someone who made it rich doing something else.
So even though it’s a playground I have mostly to myself right now – I figure every gathering is a bit more fun when your peers turn up. I do regular (almost daily) “Snapstorms” of content around one topic for entrepreneurs and VCs. Thus begins Snapchat and why you don’t get it. That’s the point.
