I’m an entrepreneur at heart so I’m always inspired when I hear stories about innovation. I’m inspired by the enthusiasm of the young, emerging startup ecosystem that is here. David Cohen deserves much credit for building TechStars into an internationally recognized brand name for innovation.

Let me start with the obvious baseline that most people probably know instinctively: Los Angeles is the 3rd largest technology startup ecosystem in the US. When you begin to peel back the onion some surprising data presents itself. Given our city is the 2nd largest metropolitan area in the country this is hardly surprising.

Sadness for the loss of a bright young New Zealander who had so much going for him, for the terrible loss for Jake’s mother and his whanau and friends, and for the loss of an up and coming innovator and entrepreneur to our business community. It also made me angry. More than half of Gen Z say they aspire to be entrepreneurs.
