I made the point (not widely publicized) that OS4 is currently “breaking&# many applications that use ad networks that are not Apples (most notably AdMob, owned by Google). Online social game network; make their own games (FarmVille, Mafia Wars, FrontierVille) in addition to allowing third-party developers to access network.

I heard from one smart source that years ago that Reid Hoffman had predicted the “game-ification&# of most Internet businesses. I’m not arguing that game dynamics in your business solution won’t be important or successful. I get the appeal and importance of this innovation in driving behavior. Fawking badges.

He’s behind IdeaLab and has created many interesting companies including innovating in solar energy ( eSolar ) and electric cars ( Aptera ). I think the best solution for the social networking era is “in-stream&# advertising. This is a CDN (Content Delivery Network). But bill is a BIG idea guy. uh, hello!

But in addition to structural reasons such as the market upturn, the increase in IPOs and the need to put capital to work, some real innovation has also encouraged a new round of investment. Mobile will likely spawn a whole new wave of innovation because it’s pervasive, location aware and always with you. Seems an obvious fit.

Many of the promising marketing and media innovations of the past six years, daily deals, subscription ecommerce, social gaming and social media, have been struggling. Perhaps new mobile ad technology will enable social networks to flourish. Fatigue is too strong a characterization.
