When Tyler applied to YC in 2012, his startup idea was an unusual one. Over the next 10 years, he and his cofounders grew Clever into an educational powerhouse, used every day by over half of K-12 students in the USA– my kids included. An API for schools? But outliers always sound unusual at the outset.

The first day of 2012 seems the perfect day to do so. A few years ago I started a mentorship organization in Los Angeles called Launchpad LA now run by the uber talented Sam Teller. We hung out a lot together a dinners and educational events. So in 2012 you’ll see me a lot more often at the Launchpad LA offices.

Even if you don’t do well really after that, Vidit Aatrey [10:46] – we will put you in a mentorship program, where we connect you with some top trainers for a month and these guys will tell you how you start a business. These are educated women but handicapped so no one ever gave them jobs. These people have never done it.
