They have marked-up paper gains propped up by an over excited venture capital market that has validated their investments. Logic tells me the following: It is hard to make money angel investing. The best angels will do very well just at the best real estate investors did well in good times and bad.

I should say that I agree that naive optimism in entrepreneurs can produce higher beta (upside or flops) and that’s good from an investment standpoint if you’re looking for big returns.

I note a couple of trends: (1) Seed stage venture capital financing have been pretty stable over the past five years and (2) while the number of deals funded was a bit lower in 2009 and 2010 for most regions, the NYC Metro area had a significant increase in the number of seed stage deals funded. Angel investing in tech startups is a gut wrenching and risky business. Most of them lose, but sometimes you invest in a “unicorn” and make 100 times your money or even more.
