I’ve been a part of a lot of different types of communities—but the one I think I’ve learned the most from is the volunteer kayaking boathouse I started on the East River in 2010. Last year, even during a pandemic, we helped nearly 7,000 people experience human powered boating on the Brooklyn waterfront. That rarely works out.
