The $35M Series C will be used to expand sales in North America, optimize and scale manufacturing, develop new software and hardware, and enter international markets

Meet Carbon Robotics — the Seattle-based startup pioneering the next revolution in agriculture by solving one of farming’s biggest obstacles.

What They’re Solving For: Food production is a universal need, making farming a vital and massive market — specialty crop farming alone is a $22B sector. Weed control is one of the largest threats to successfully growing crops, but current tools are archaic, mechanical, and offer limited efficacy (manual labor is costly and increasingly scarce and the widespread use of harmful chemicals has led to herbicide resistant weeds that are rapidly multiplying following decades of over-spraying).

What They Do: The company builds innovative agricultural tools that empower farmers to operate more efficiently. Carbon Robotics’ LaserWeeder™ is the first and only commercial robot that leverages sophisticated AI deep learning technology, computer vision, robotics, and lasers to deliver high-precision weed control.

How They Do It: The LaserWeeder™, a pull-behind robot, identifies weeds and targets them for elimination. The technology implements 30 high-powered CO2 lasers with thermal energy to destroy the meristem (plant tissue at the roots and shoots) of the weed with millimeter accuracy — all without damaging nearby crops or disturbing soil.

The Results To-Date: Farmers utilizing Carbon Robotics’ LaserWeeder™ have reduced weed control costs by up to 80%, while decreasing their reliance on dangerous chemicals that are potentially hazardous to the end-consumer. In 2023, LaserWeeders will be active across 17 U.S. states and three Canadian provinces.

Where They’re Headed: This latest round of financing brings Carbon Robotics’ total funding to-date to $72 million. The company’s $35M Series C will be used to expand sales in North America, optimize and scale manufacturing, develop new software and hardware agtech products, and enter international markets.

Revolution Growth is excited to partner with Carbon Robotics to unlock the power of AI for one of the oldest industries in the world, paving the way for more farmers to adopt sustainable farming practices at scale. We look forward to leveraging our climate and policy expertise to help Carbon Robotics transform agricultural standards across the globe.
