I had the pleasure of interviewing James Martin, the CEO and co-founder of Butterflye, a software company dedicated to helping businesses effectively communicate changes to their products and services. With over 12 years of experience in the SaaS industry, James possesses a profound understanding of the challenges businesses encounter when striving to keep their customers informed about modifications to their products, services, or processes.

What motivated you to launch your startup?

I was motivated to launch Butterflye because I recognized a genuine need for a more efficient way for businesses to communicate changes to their customers and, importantly, gather feedback from them. Through personal experience and the experiences of others, I witnessed the frustrations stemming from a lack of transparency and visibility caused by frequent changes made by innovative companies. I knew there had to be a better solution.

What excites you about what you’re building?

When we talk about “customers,” we’re referring to both internal and external customers. At Butterflye, our goal is to ensure that everyone stays well-informed, remains in the loop, and has a voice.

I’m excited about the potential of Butterflye to revolutionize how companies proactively handle customer communications and feedback. I firmly believe that our platform can empower businesses to forge stronger relationships with their customers, enhance their product development processes, and minimize churn.

What has been your biggest challenge when growing your startup?

Our most significant challenge has been educating the market about the significance of effective change communication and the empowerment of crowdsourced feedback. Numerous businesses are still unaware of the benefits of utilizing a platform like Butterflye, and it can be challenging to persuade them to invest in a new solution, even when the return on investment is evident. In other words, the more informed your internal and external stakeholders are and the more they have a platform to voice their thoughts, the less time your front-line teams spend “firefighting.” This allows these teams to focus on their core responsibilities.

What are your future plans for your startup?

Butterflye is currently in its early adopters phase. We’re diligently working to onboard more customers and refine our product offering based on their invaluable feedback. These early adopters play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our product. You can learn how to get involved at butterflye.io.

Additionally, we are integrating AI throughout the product itself to enhance its capabilities.

If you had to share “words of wisdom” with a Founder who’s about to start their own startup, what would they be?

A few weeks ago, I conquered the Manitou Incline (look it up). It’s not for the faint of heart. I shared the following on LinkedIn, and it still holds true:

“Yesterday I decided to take a day out for the first time since starting Butterflye Solutions.

For my ‘relaxing’ day off, I decided to tackle the Manitou Incline after 5 years of being in Colorado.

Much like starting a business… it’s a grind but worth it!… One step at a time!!!”

Indeed, the journey of entrepreneurship is comparable to conquering a challenge step by step, and the effort is rewarding in the end.
