How VCs Can and Should Invest in Later Rounds

David Teten - VC

You have to know when to hold them and know when to fold them. So when a company in which I’m an investor is raising a later round, should we (the VC investor) keep our pro rata or get diluted? . My view is that one should always make this decision on an individual company basis. Almost all VC investments include pro rata rights. These give the right to invest more money in a company sufficient to keep the same percentage ownership, for so long as we have both the cash and the appetite.

4 Ways Partnerships Can Scale and Increase Profits For Your Business

Smart Hustle Magazine

When I launched one of my companies, the Small Business Summit, I started it with a partner. She was an older white lady, who had an MBA and was great with numbers. I was a young black guy, who loved marketing (hated numbers) and event production. We were a great fit. This was one of my first successful partnerships. It worked so well, we eventually sold the business. You can't grow your business alone. You need a team. A partner can be a great part of that team.

What Happened When I Hit a Wall and the Important Question I’m Using to Move Past It

Last week, I wrote about how essential it is to ask yourself one important question before going through an accelerator program: What do you want your (work) life to be like? Meaning, unless you define what you want your time in-program (or when starting really anything) to look like, the world around you will surely help do it for you. I keep coming back to this question since writing it last week, though. Because I think there’s actually a deeper question behind this question.

Business Model Innovation

A VC: Musings of a VC in NYC

I’ve shared my views on this before here at AVC. I believe business model innovation is more disruptive than technical innovation. A good example of this was moving from web apps to mobile apps, which was largely a technical innovation. While the move to mobile certainly created some new companies, it largely strengthened the market position of the big Internet companies because there was little to no business model innovation. Compare that to the move from desktop computing to the web.

The Heretic

A VC: Musings of a VC in NYC

I am reading a friend’s book which is still in proofs and so I’m not going to talk about it yet. But there is one part of the book that really rang true for me and that is when he talks about certain kinds of problematic employees, particularly one he calls The Heretic. This kind of employee, and we have all seen this up close, is negative about the Company and disses the management, coworkers, the board, the strategy, the workplace, and everything else under the sun.

I was catching up on MG’s newsletter/blog and came across this opening line , which got me thinking about a concept in investing, specifically in deal sourcing: To me, all information is about triangulation. Any single source, no matter how close to the situation?—?and and often times because they’re too close to the situation?—?lacks lacks full clarity. Triangulation is one way to describe this. Another term to describe this is stolen from nature: echolocation.

Why Churn Rates Can Spike When Your SaaS Startup Experiences Hypergrowth

Tomasz Tunguz

In Rethinking Customer Churn Rate & LTV/CAC , Thibaud Clement illuminates a counter-intuitive concept about churn. The faster you increase your growth rate (acceleration rate), the higher the churn rate. Consider the same startup under two scenarios: one in which the acceleration rate is 50% and one in which the acceleration rate is 0%. In the 50% scenario, churn will be 67% higher. A surprising result. Why does this happen?

In 1961, the president challenged NASA and the nation to land an astronaut on the moon before the decade was over. Russia had taken the lead in the race for space with the Sputnik launch in 1957. NASA was only 3 years old. The United States was in catch-up mode. The Cold War was chilling the world.
