Paul Graham and The World Out There

This is going to be BIG.

'There is a controversial interview with Paul Graham floating around and I''m left to wonder why we''re still paying attention to guys like him. He is accused by people of being, at best, oblivious and at worst, sexist. I''ve never sat down with the guy, so I can''t speak to that, but I''m tired of hearing about the same voices over and over again when I''m not even sure they''re relevant.

Understanding the Politics of Tech Startups

Both Sides of the Table

'Many startups these days are started by young, technical or product founders who are in the idealistic phase of their lives and careers. Thus I hear many talk about “radical transparency” when virtually ever experienced operator in my inner circle talks knowingly about that naiveté. It’s not that I don’t love idealism – I was young once, too!

10 Startup Shortcuts That Will Be Back To Haunt You

Gust

'Image via HealthyBodyLife.com. I’ve been advising and mentoring startups and growth companies for years, and find myself always pushing them to try something new, for the sake of growth and survival. My dad said: “Never take on a business partner.”

Berkonomics

'My dad was a smart businessman, even if not formally trained. He occasionally gave me advice that turned out to be more than wise, looking back at subsequent experience and events. His personal teaching event was a typical experience, as I reflect now upon the tens of partnerships I have counseled over the years. Most often, one partner remained active as another partner drifted away from the business, no longer carrying the weight anticipated at start-up.

How do others hear your story?

This is going to be BIG.

'Storytelling is one of the most important skills you can have as a founder. You tell stories to investors, customers, potential new hires, the press and partners. The key to telling a good story, and what I find most often lacking, is the ability to put yourself in someone else''s shoes. Who is this person and what about this story are they going to care about?

As an American angel investor, what would it take for you to invest in a Brazilian startup?

Gust

'I would be unlikely to invest in a Brazilian startup at this time because I have absolutely no background or knowledge of the local market, I don’t speak Portuguese, I would be unlikely to be able to attend board meetings or even visit the company, and finally because there are issues relative to double-taxation under US and local tax codes that make many international investments challenging.

One of my investors wants me to host a session where all the investors can meet and talk to each other. Is this a normal request?

Gust

'There’s nothing inherently wrong with your investors meeting each other, and it’s actually usually a pretty good thing. That said, it’s a bit unusual coming from the F&F side rather than the professional investor side. So I’d just be a bit cautious in trying to understand why your friend is pushing for this. Could it be that s/he just want to hang out with the “high profile” types?

Resolve to Be

This is going to be BIG.

'Last night, at a New Years Eve party, I asked a few people if they had any resolutions for 2014. It was a mix of the usual--get more sleep, wake up early, eat better, go to the gym, get something accomplished at work, etc. No matter what people said, though--it all seemed kind of. well. fragile. When you resolve to do something, so many things could get in the way, not the least of which is a change of priorities.

Should Your Startup Adopt a New Management Style?

Tomasz Tunguz

Earlier this week, Zappos declared they will abandon traditional management structure for holacracy , a management ethos that eschews pyramids and hierarchy in favor of self-organizing groups, called holons. Changing my mind about blogging

This is going to be BIG.

'I''ve been dolling out career advice ever since I walked into college with a paid internship in finance. I seemed to know what I was doing, so lots of people asked me for help. I spent a lot of time thinking about what seemed to be driving my career and the paths of others, because I wanted to make sure I really believed that the advice that I was sharing could work.
