Interview: Greg Weyerhaeuser Piasecki, ex-President, Rock Island Company, family holding company

DC Finance is one of the oldest and largest family office networks. They hosted Greg Weyerhaeuser Piasecki, former President of one of America’s largest family holding companies, and one of my LPs, for a virtual interview with me, Tuesday, October 26, for Accredited Investors only.

 

This is a rare opportunity to learn more about the family office world, as well as about Versatile VC.

Greg Weyerhaeuser Piasecki served for 8 years as President of Rock Island Company, where he helped run his family’s system, including 250 households, 467 cousins, a thousand accounts, six branches, seven generations, two public companies, two dozen foundations, a large single family office, four mutual funds, and its seventh private equity fund of funds. As a member of the board of Clearwater Management Company, he oversaw the family-sponsored investment vehicles. Previously, he worked as an investment banker for Lazard Freres, Morgan Stanley & Co., and Pacific Solutions Group in New York, Shanghai, and Beijing. He graduated from Yale and Wharton. 

Today, Mr. Piasecki serves on the board of Piasecki Aircraft Corporation, a global leader in vertical take-off and landing aircraft. He has recently invested in and/or advised several companies of note:

  • VEA Aviation, which is certifying a hydrogen-powered helicopter
  • RobotWits, a path planning and decision-making software company, recently sold to Google’s Waymo
  • a vertically integrated wind turbine manufacturing company
  • a decoupling fund which purchases Chinese-owned stakes in US private companies that hold technology, infrastructure, and databases critical to US national security
  • the Upper Valley (NH) Land Trust on cell tower management. 

Mr. Piasecki’s interests include lumbermaking, cabinetry, US National Dragonboat Team (medalist in the Worlds), biking, sailing, hunting, rowing, and flying. Mr. Piasecki holds a private pilot’s certificate in single engine land and sea planes. Mr. Piasecki lives in Hanover, NH with his three adorable children near their mother.
