From Sneakers to Startups: Unveiling the Journey of Samuel Thomas, Scout at Bessemer Venture Partners Steel DAO
I had the pleasure of interviewing Samuel Thomas. A Scout at Bessemer Venture Partners Steel DAO, focuses on early-stage startups in the Consumer Crypto, web3 Gaming, Infrastructure, and DeFi space.
Samuel is the founder of Thomas Brand, which is a bootstrapped sneaker reseller business that sold over 700 pairs of sneakers and generated over $250K in 2019.
What is it that excites you about investing?
What excites me the most about investing is meeting ambitious founders that want to address challenges that consumers or enterprises are facing and how they plan to solve it. Furthermore, the daily innovation that I encounter, from blockchain and web3 to artificial intelligence, keeps me on the edge of my seat.
What has been your biggest challenge when it comes to finding the “right deals”?
Considering I am primarily engaged in blockchain and web3, there has been a dearth of new ideas brought to the forefront. Hopefully, this will change as more regulatory clarity emerges in the coming months and years, and more consumers have a greater grasp of how web3 might benefit them.
What major trends do you expect to see in technology innovation over the next 5 years that excites you?
The trends that will excite me in the coming years are cryptocurrency intertwining with various banking systems, web3 becoming a force in the social media landscape, AI assisting independent filmmakers and screenwriters in producing Hollywood production movies at a lower cost, and spatial computing being a big part of how we interact with games and entertainment.
If you had to share, “words of wisdom,” with a Founder who’s about to start their own startup, what would they be?
Although there will be many late nights and early mornings, trials and tribulations, and road bumps, it will be well worth it in the end if you’re solving a real problem. Be persistent and go for it!
