Why Employers Should Consider Recruiting Remote Employees

One lesson the COVID pandemic has taught us is that employees do not need to work in the same location as their employer to be productive. This has since opened up a much larger pool of candidates for companies as they no longer need to focus on recruiting in areas near an office location.

This may be a new way of doing things for many employers, but there are a lot of benefits to recruiting remote employees.

Benefits for the employer

  • A more productive workforce: Fifty-three percent of remote employees said they were likely to work overtime. When an employee is working remotely, they don’t have as many distractions as they would in the office, such as impromptu meetings or idle chats with coworkers. Remote employees also don’t have to account for commuting time, so they are more likely to work later and be more productive when they are working.
  • Access to global talent: When you only recruit candidates in areas where there is a physical office space, you are limiting your talent pool to people who live within commuting distance from the office. By recruiting remotely, you gain access to a larger group of talent, ensuring you are hiring the best person for the job and are not restricted to a particular geographic area.
  • Reduced employee turnover: It’s estimated that it costs 20% of an employee’s salary to replace them. If the position requires additional training and education, the turnover costs will be even higher. Ninety-five percent of employers say working remotely has a positive impact on employee retention, and two-thirds of employees said they would take a new job in order to ease, or remove, their commute.

Benefits for the employee

  • Reduced transportation costs: By eliminating the need to commute to the office, employees save money on commuting expenses such as gas, tolls, mileage or public transportation. Employees working remotely reported saving approximately $4,600 per year by cutting back on transportation costs.
  • Lower day-to-day expenses: Lunch with coworkers, morning coffee stops and trips to the vending machine can really add up. When working remotely, employees are able to cut back on these expenses and save money on the day-to-day items that add up over time.
  • Less stress and increased job satisfaction: Working remotely reduces employee stress levels by removing the stressors of traveling, having to take off to care for a sick child and staying late at the office. Employees who work remotely feel a greater sense of job satisfaction as well.
