Heading East
The Gotham Gal and I are heading to Europe for a couple of weeks of vacation.
I will not be working the next two weeks but do plan to blog about whatever is on my mind.
The Gotham Gal, as is her custom, will blog about the various fun things we are going to do on this trip.
I am looking forward to some down time, some good books, and seeing the sights and sounds of different places.
I am a big believer in vacations. We all work hard, get ground down, and taking some time with friends and family to unwind, clear the head, and refresh is always a wonderful thing. I am excited to do that myself.

Have fun.I’ll be in Europe for a short trip as I love it this time of year.A mellowness in the cities and the warm comfort and conviviality of the local wine bars.A post harvest pause in the countryside and the perfect time to visit with friends and winemakers, for informal meals, wine for lunch and leaning back.
I’m going bankrupt with all the new wines I’m “cellaring” (drinking) right now. There’s been a huge turn toward the interesting here in Vienna in terms of what people are making in the regions of Austria, nearby, and with what’s available in the shops. I think it was you who turned me onto some Slovenian orange wines back in the day.
Ha!I remember visiting Vienna as a then year old blogger in 2010 and writing a series of post on the trip.Austrian Wines…a quick glance at an old wine culture (Part 1) http://arnoldwaldstein.com/…Still has to be the city with most in-city vineyards–not just where you make wine ala Brooklyn or Berkeley–but where the vineyards are.And yes, with the growth of creativity that has been born with the Natural Wine Movement, such great innovation in Austria. Astounding actually.

Whether east or west (to Jason’s point that east is the other way), you are most often going North when heading from US to Europe. But you rarely hear somebody heading out from the US say that they are going North to Europe (unless heading to Northern Europe).Nice and Florence sit on the exact same latitude.So…You are on the Promenade des Anglais, looking out at the Mediterranean.Or… you are in Florence in a country usually placed in “Southern” Europe geographically.And then you realize you are 3 degrees north of New York and about 2 degrees North of Chicago.Nice and Florence: 43.7 degrees North.Chicago – 41.8 degrees North.New York city – 40.7 degrees North.And…writing about how north Europe is….reminded me of this.Josh: Wait…relative size is one thing, but you’re telling me Germany isn’t where we think it is.Dr John: Nothing is where you think it is.Dr John: You’re probably wondering what all of this has to do with social equality.CJ: No, I am wondering where France really is.https://www.youtube.com/wat…

I am happy to see this line ” I will not be working” ….the majority of people I know “work” while on vacation…that does not let your mind shut down. I specifically let everyone know I am not working…and I don’t. Kudos to you…enjoy! I just got back from Burgundy and it was fabulous…

A vacation between the months of September and June. I’ve heard legend of those :-)Certainly something Devorah and I are going to have to try when we finally retire from teaching.
We’re leaving town as well, going to visit our daughter who is studying abroad in Bologna. I am astonished to note that it has been over 30 years since we left the North American continent. Enjoy your trip and wish us luck!
