WJR Business Beat with Jeff Sloan: Mobile Usage Soars During Pandemic (Episode 156)

It’s no surprise that 2020 was a monster year for mobile phone engagement, driven largely by the COVID crisis. Mobile usage increased 25% this year over 2019, according to App Annie’s 2020 End of Year Mobile Report.

While all app categories in the report saw respective lifts in time users spent on them, here are the biggest gainers:

  • Social media platforms up 20%
  • Shopping platforms up 25%
  • Finance platforms up 25%
  • Games up 35%
  • Video streaming platforms up 40%%

Overall, app growth was largely driven by a huge 200% surge in business app usage.

Which mobile apps ranked within the top three downloads this year?

Tune in to this morning’s Business Beat to hear Jeff share the full report:

“So, what does that mean if you’re an entrepreneur? Well, you have to look for ways to gain an advantage and you have to go where the action is. If you want to be where the action is, you need to look to mobile as a key platform for engagement, creating awareness and sales into the future. “

Good morning!

2020 was a monster year for mobile phone engagement, driven largely by the COVID crisis. Time spent on our mobile phones increased 25% over 2019, according to App Annie’s 2020 End of Year Mobile Report.

Other key findings? While all app categories in the report saw respective lifts in time spent, here are the biggest gainers: social media platforms up 20%; shopping up 25%; finance up 25%; games up 35%; video streaming up 40%. And the overall growth was largely driven by a huge 200% surge in business app usage.

Now worldwide spending across Apple’s app store and Google Play also grew by as much as 25% to 112 billion total spend in 2020 and overall mobile app in game downloads swelled 10% from last year to 130 billion total downloads this year

As mobile usage soared this year, the biggest winners were TikTok and remote collaboration tools that became defacto tools of those working from home.

On App Annie’s ranking of the most downloaded apps, it was indeed TikTok. It jumped three spots from 2019 to head to the top of the list, followed by Facebook, WhatsApp and Zoom, which climbed an amazing 219 spots on this year’s list.

So, what does that mean if you’re an entrepreneur? Well, you have to look for ways to gain an advantage and you have to go where the action is. If you want to be where the action is, you need to look to mobile as a key platform for engagement, creating awareness and sales into the future.
