Community of Cultivators

Here at GCUC we are immensely fortunate to cross paths and work with so many amazing people. Through our work, we’ve cultivated a global community of people we think you should know about.Community of Cultivators is a blog series we created to introduce you to coworking game changers and connectors. Each month, we’ll release new interviews that we hope inform and inspire you.

Iris KavanaghThis week we had the pleasure of interviewing friend and cofounder of Women Who Cowork, Iris Kavanagh.

Note: If any of you ladies are joining us at GCUC Canada – you should come in a couple days before to take part of the women who cowork retreat.

What in your life are you most proud of cultivating or creating? Why?

I am most proud of creating my children and cultivating the older one into a happy, well-adjusted adult who loves themself and feels responsible to be a good citizen of the world. To date this is my greatest accomplishment.

Where do you personally feel the most sense of community?

I personally feel the most sense of community when I am home, in the region I grew up in, surrounded by people who have lived in the same way I was raised. The shared experience we have is very unique and being with a group of people who “get me” is very tangible with this community. I also feel a deep sense of community when I am at my coworking space, often when I am walking in and everyone says “hello” as I settle in.

What podcast would you recommend to others and why?

I love the TED Radio podcast. I like the new ideas it introduces, love to hear from creators and enjoy listening to people speak about their passions.

What is one piece of advice you give everyone that works with and/or for you?

Know “why” you are opening a coworking space. The “why” is the most important part. Keep that “why” in mind with everything you do and allow it to guide your decisions and policies. Also “What are your brand values?” Make sure your brand values guide every decision you make and inform your brand and company culture.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of becoming an entrepreneur?

Yes. Just go for it.

What is the best habit you ever started?

Self-compassion is the best habit I ever started. It’s been a true life-changer to be as kind and forgiving to myself as I am to others.

If you had to put a quote on your gravestone what would it be?

She loved.
