Developments in The Security Industry

  • Since Russia interfered in the last Presidential election, many lawmakers are taking an interest in how election technology manufacturers are working to increase cybersecurity. Cyberscoop looks at how one company is revamping its security procedures, including letting penetration testers from both the public and private sector evaluate the safety of its systems. 

  • In late-March, the United Kingdom's Huawei Cyber Security Centre Oversight Board reported that the company had not fixed critical security flaws in its products, even after promising to patch specific issues back in 2012. The government body also said that it doesn't believe Huawei has committed to fixing the security problems in the future.

  • Several weeks ago security researchers announced they had determined that two third-party Facebook app developers had stored more than 540 million unprotected user records such as names, passwords, comments, and likes in publicly accessible AWS databases.

  • A cybersecurity researcher recently noticed that his seat back screen on a flight had a camera embedded in it, and Tweeted about the issue to Singapore Airlines. The Tweet and the media coverage that followed it prompted discussion among industry trade groups, other airlines, and two U.S. Senators about the potential privacy and security implications of recording passengers in-flight.

  • According to a new report from Risk Based Security, 6,500 publicly known data breaches from 2018 exposed more than 5 billion user records, a decrease from the 7.9 billion user records that hackers compromised in 2017.

Cybersecurity Venture Funding News

Deepwatch, which provides managed security services, closed a $23 million Series A led by ABS Capital Partners.

  • CI Security, a seven-year-old, Seattle, Wa.-based company that sells managed detection and response and cybersecurity consulting services, has raised $9.6 million in Series B funding led by East Seattle Partners. 

  • Alsid, a three-year-old, Paris-based startup that says its cybersecurity product is capable of protecting the heart of networks, has raised $14.7 million in funding.

  • Armis, a Palo Alto, Calif.-based enterprise IoT security company, raised $65 million in Series C funding. Sequoia Capital led the round. 

  • Qualcomm Ventures led an $18 million strategic round of funding in industrial IoT security platform CyberX.

  • Aqua Security, a company whose product ensures that software containers remain immutable, closed a $62 million Series C led by Insight Partners.

  • Mangrove Capital Partners led a $6 million investment in security operations center services provider CyberHat.
