They have marked-up paper gains propped up by an over excited venture capital market that has validated their investments. Logic tells me the following: It is hard to make money angel investing. The best angels will do very well just at the best real estate investors did well in good times and bad.

This is a good time to reflect on my experience with locally based angel investment. I just finished with the fourth of our annual angel investment event for my local group based in Eugene and Corvallis, Oregon. That’s worked out very well for us, which is part of the reason I blog on this site regularly. .

We spoke about the changes to an “accredited investor&# proposed by Chris Dodd – This would be bad for angel investing. I first discovered it from Dharmesh Shah’s blog OnStartups. Swipely – Blippy competitor founded by TellMe founder, Angus Davis, in Fall 2009. We spoke briefly about why.

Box had just 50 employees and was hitting an inflection point when I joined in 2009, so there was far more work to do than people to do it. Today, my best advice is to be prepared, and when things get tough, for founders, boards and comms teams to take a deep breath and not overreact (I could write a whole blog post on this).

Make sure these people understand the nature of early-stage angel investing. I still prefer angel route 1 (above) but this is the next best option in my mind. When I write an angel round check I always tell me wife, “let’s assume that money is lost.&# So goes angel investing.
